History Coonabarabran is a town in the Warrumbungle region of New South Wales, Australia. The first inhabitants of Coonabarabran were indigenous Australian people from the Wiradjuri tribe.In 1832, the first white settlers arrived and by 1839 Coonabarabran was a thriving town with a public school, post office, police station and churches. In 1881, a railway line opened to Binnaway and by 1887 all major services were established.In 1893, the Warrumbungle Shire Council was formed and by 1902 it had grown to become one of the biggest shires in NSW. In 1912, a commission was appointed to investigate municipal boundaries. At the 2016 census, the town had a population of 2,537. Local and district residents refer to the town as 'Coona'.
