Overview Cowra is a tiny suburb in New South Wales, Australia's Central West area, with a population of 10,426 people, according to census 2016. It is the largest urban hub and the congressional seat for the Cowra Shire. It is situated around 310 m (1,017 ft) above ocean level, on the banks of the Lachlan Creek in the Lachlan Valley. By car, it's about 310 kilometres (193 miles) southwest of Sydney and 189 kilometres (117 miles) north of Canberra, the country's capital. Moreover, the city is located at the crossroads of three major roads: the Olympic Highway, Lachlan Valley Way, and the Mid-Western Highway.

History in Cowra Cowra was established in 1846 and got its name from an Aboriginal phrase that means "the rocks." It was declared a town in 1849 and a municipality in 1888. It is connected to Sydney (about 140 miles [230 km] east) by air, train, and the Midwestern Highway. The town provides a vineyard, livestock, grain, and multiple cropping region wherein the water resources are from the Wyangala Reservoir on the Lachlan. It is also the site of one of Australia's main prisoner of war camps during World War II.
