History of Curra Derived from an Aboriginal word “Kurui”, Curra technically means grey forest possum. The traditional settlers of the Gympie Region and the areas surrounding Mary River Valley were the Kabi Tribe. One of the original landowners of Curra was Walter Hay, whose cattle station homestead was once called Currie. Eventually, it became Curra, which is the present name of the locality. The town was a renowned stopover during the gold rush era in 1867.
