History of Darley When Scottish pastoralist Kenneth Clarke came to Bacchus Marsh Valley in 1836, he selected Darley off the Lerderderg River to build his hut. English settler Captain William Henry Bacchus, after whom Bacchus Marsh got its name, took over the hut in 1838 and set up his estate there. During the Victorian Gold Rush, the area expanded as a commuter hub, and Darley became the centre of the settlement.
In 1861, Darley got township status. The agricultural hub expanded in all directions, and new neighbourhoods began to take shape in subsequent years. During the 1980s and 1990s, Bacchus Marsh underwent a rapid transformation, and Darley also witnessed significant growth to become the most populous locality in the town.
