History of Deer Park Deer Park first got its name from Kororoit Creek, which ran through the suburb. Later, it was renamed Deer Park to symbolise the stock of game deer housed at the Melbourne Hunt Club. The Ballarat Road is still home to the original Hunt Club building, opened in 1885 and sits adjacent to the sports oval. In 1878, the Post Office came up as Kororoit Creek. In 1889, its name was changed to Deer Park.

The suburb was the site of the first explosives factory in Melbourne, which was chosen for its isolation miles away from the outskirts of the urban city. In the 1920s, several houses were built for factory workers and managers. This led to the expansion of a rural village into an industrial suburb. Deer Park underwent a lot of growth and development in the post-war era. Many of the surrounding streets get their names from several localities in the UK.
