History of Docklands Before Melbourne was formed, the site of Docklands used to be a wetlands area. It is filled with swamps and a large salt lake. It also served as an open hunting ground for the Wurundjeri people. John Batman, an Australian grazer and explorer, was one of the first settlers of Docklands. However, it wasn’t until the opening of a rail infrastructure when the city’s industry expanded in the late 1860s. In July 2007, Docklands became an official part of the City of Melbourne.
