History of Eaglemont The suburb was formerly known as Mount Eaglemont, named after a large house built here in the 1850s by parliamentarian J.H. Brooke. The area remained agricultural until it experienced a land boom in the 1880s.
The Mount Eaglemont estate and another property were purchased by a syndicate and was subdivided. The area, however, continued to be vacant until 1888, when it was offered to a group of artists. Architect and artists Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin were commissioned to design a subdivision of the land.
