History of East Ballina Bundjalung Aborigines had inhabited the area for thousands of years before Europeans arrived (middens on the coast are at least 2,000 years old). It was estimated that at least 500 people resided there at the time of European settlement. In the hinterland, they hunted pademelons, wallabies, bandicoots, and flying foxes before heading to the coast in September to collect shoals of salmon caught inside the surf and slain with spears.
