It is located 2 kilometres from the central business district of Toowoomba and about 104 kilometres from Brisbane. The south and east of the suburb can be accessed through the Warrego Highway. The 2016 census lists East Toowoomba as having a population of 5,244.

The main campus of the Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE and the elite schools of Toowoomba Grammar School for boys and Fairhome College for girls are in this suburb.
