Overview Esk is a suburb in the Somerset Region in South East Queensland, Australia; it is located around 64 km Northwest of Ipswich on the Brisbane Valley Highway. It is the administrative centre of the Somerset Region and is contained in the Queensland electoral district of Nanango.
Living in Esk Esk offers a village-like lifestyle and a quiet place. The incredible thing about the locality is its natural beauty and the wildlife. However, the suburb is not known for its nightlife and shopping, but several shops and stores are there. The main attractions in and around Esk include Lake Somerset and Lake Wivenhoe. These lakes are created by dams and consist of many camping areas with water sports and recreational activities. The main water activities include fishing, canoeing, boating, and skiing. Other popular spots include Crows Nest and Ravensbourne National Parks.
History of Esk Esk was named after the River Esk in England and Scotland. Jagara is one of the Aboriginal languages of South-eats Queensland. However, it is not sure whether Jagara is a language, dialect, group, or clan. It formed part of the southern border of the Garumga clan of the Dalla tribe. In 1830, Captain Patrick Logan first explored the land around Esk, but the settlers moved into the region somewhere around the 1840s. Initially, the locality was established to service the short-lived copper mines of Eskdale and Cressbrook Creek. In 1874, Mount Esk Post Office opened and was renamed Esk in 1881.
