History Evatt is a suburb in the Belconnen district of Canberra, located within the Australian Capital Territory, Australia. Evatt lies between the suburbs of McKellar, Belconnen, Florey, Melba and Spence.The suburb is named after Herbert Vere Evatt (1894–1965), a Justice of the High Court and Leader of the Opposition in the 1950s. The suburb was gazetted on 2 November 1972. Streets in the suburb are named after people associated with parliament, and law professionals. Evatt has three neighbourhood ovals: Evatt Neighbourhood Oval, adjacent to Evatt Primary School; South West Evatt Oval, and St. Monica's Primary School oval. Evatt was established in 1887, when the area was originally set aside for livestock grazing.The area was surveyed in 1891, by Charles Rasp, who named the town after Senator Isaac Evatt.A small settlement developed around the railway station to service the rural community.In the 1900s, a sawmill provided employment for many of the residents until it closed in 1924.The local progress association lobbied for a school, which finally opened in 1910.This town has always been quiet and serene. It is located near Canberra's northern suburbs and is home to just over 100 people.
