History of Forster The suburb is named after William Forster, who was the premier of New South Wales in 1859-60. The 80-sq-km area was earlier called Minimbah, dominated by Worimi Aboriginals. In 1770, Captain Cook sailed close to Forster. However, the first Europeans arrived to settle in the area in 1856. The Godwin family befriended the Aboriginals and set up an estate with a house. It became Forster in 1869 after William Forster, who was the secretary of lands then.

Forster got village status in 1862, and a school came in 1870. Soon many large sawmills appeared in the area, and by 1874, there was a hotel in Forster. It grew rapidly in the 1940s and became part of Forster-Tuncurry twin city in the 1960s.
