Overview Franklin is a popular suburb in the Gungahlin district of Canberra, Australian Capital Territory (ACT). It is neighboured by the following suburbs: Gungahlin, Harrison, Mitchell, and the Canberra Nature Park. As of the 2016 census, the population of Franklin was 6,419.
Living in Franklin Franklin is a peaceful suburb full of clean and green open spaces such as parks and playgrounds. The Franklin community is warm and friendly. Its residents also get preference in schools and colleges such as the Franklin Early Childhood School, the Harrison School, the Gungahlin College and the Palmerstone District Primary School.
There are many cafes and a few restaurants in the suburb. The streets of this suburb are designed to minimize traffic. Public busses also operate in the suburb. It is a five-minute drive away from the Gungahlin town centre, where residents can visit for many recreational activities.
History of Franklin Franklin is a reasonably new suburb that was gazetted in 2007. It was named after the famous novelist, Miles Franklin and the streets were named after writers. As of the 2011 census, 44.4% of Franklin residents were foreign-born, the third-highest of all Canberra suburbs. In recent history, three light rail stations were opened here in 2019.
