History Geraldton is a coastal city in the mid-west region of the Australian state of Western Australia, 424 kilometres north of the state capital, Perth. Early historical timeline: In 1827, the first European settlers arrived at King George Sound to set up a base for trading.In 1829, the settlement was given the name of Geraldton after the Governor's wife.In 1832, a convict stockade was established near the site of today's town. In 1833, a famine caused by swarms of locusts led to deaths from starvation and disease.In 1836, a new prison was built near the site of today's town with convict labour.In 1840, a new military barracks was built near the site of today's town with convict labour.
