History of Gillieston Heights The suburb was known as East Greta until 1967, when it was renamed Gillieston Heights in the memory of John Gillies, a former provincial legislator and Maitland mayor. It was under the domain of the Wonnarua people. However, the small European settlement expanded after coal production started in 1888.
