History of Gillieston Heights The suburb was known as East Greta until 1967, when it was renamed Gillieston Heights in the memory of John Gillies, a former provincial legislator and Maitland mayor. It was under the domain of the Wonnarua people. However, the small European settlement expanded after coal production started in 1888. With more mining activities, railways came to Gillieston Heights in 1893. The suburb saw rapid growth after 2005 when the local government began an ambitious urban settlement strategy.
