History of Gordon The suburb's name first appeared as a name of the survey parish that covered most of the Upper North Shore region, which Sir Thomas Mitchell assigned. It is believed that Mitchell named the area after Sir Willoughby Gordon, whom he had served in the Peninsular War.
The first settlement in the area happened around the 1820s, and it was first called Lane Cove. In the mid to late 19th century, a post office, school and railway station were already built in the suburb. By the 20th century, Gordon became the headquarters of Sun Microsystems Australia, and a Bunnings also opened here.
