History of Guildford A part of the Cumberland Plain, Guildford was the ancient home of the Bidjigal clan of the Dharug Aboriginals. Lieutenant Samuel North received a large land grant in the area in 1817.

He named the area Guildford in 1837 after his relative, the Earl of Guildford, who served as British prime minister between 1770 and 1782. The small hamlet of Guildford expanded to have a school in 1870 and a railway station in 1876. New Guildford developed around the station, and by the 1980s, it had big commercial and industrial centres.
