Overview Gwandalan is a suburb on the southern shore of Lake Macquarie. It is about 45 km south of Newcastle, the second-largest city in New South Wales. The suburb is under the administration of the Central Coast Council and had 3,273 residents at the 2016 census. Thanks to its peninsular location, Gwandalan offers a superb view of the area dominated by tourist destinations, such as Belmont, Cooranbong, Swansea and Toronto.

Newcastle is less than an hour's drive to the north, while Gosford – the third biggest city in New South Wales – lies 50 km south of the suburb. Swansea, a major urban area in the lake area, is less than 15 minutes away. Gwandalan is an affordable suburb with good educational facilities, shops, clubs and lots of community activities. Thanks to the suburb's proximity to the lake and beaches on the coast, there are plenty of recreational activities. Large shopping arcades, including Tuggerah Westfields and Lake Haven complex, are accessible within 30 minutes, while Wyee railway station is only 15 minutes away.
History of Gwandalan Gwandalan means "restful place" in the Aboriginal language. It is believed that Rupert Vale named the place. She was the daughter-in-law of James Vale, who founded the nearby Mannering Park. Gwandalan was home to the Awabakal people, who lived around Lake Macquarie. Captain William Reid was the first European to arrive in the area on his way from Sydney to Newcastle in 1800. Following his discovery of Lake Macquarie, surrounding areas, including Gwandalan, saw an influx of Europeans. However, the region saw settlements of significant scale only after the 1870s.
