Overview Harrington is a quaint rural town on the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales. Port Macquarie is 70 to its north while Newcastle is 190 km to its south. Harrington is 330 km from Sydney. Taree, a major agricultural centre, is located 30 km west of the rural town. The easter border runs along the Pacific Ocean while the Manning River mouth forms the southern boundary.
Living in Harrington Once a historical, sleepy fishing village, Harrington today stands home to modern housing estates, shopping centres and sports facilities. Though it continues to be a centre of both inland and saltwater fishing, tourism flourishes thanks to its coastal location. Harrington has become home to large-scale residential developments. The famous Crowdy Head beach is only 7km, and it provides 360-degree views of the area. Beaches are pristine and safe for surfing. Harrington is also home to excellent schools providing quality academic, sporting and social programs. There are several playgrounds and parks with ample scope for recreation. Richies IGA Supermarket is located at the heart of the town, and Beach Street have stores of all types.
History of Harrington In 1818, John Oxley, while surveying the mouth of the Manning River, named the water channel as Harrington Inlet in the memory of English general and politician Charles Stanhope, the Earl of Harrington. Soon the settlement, which was established in 1853, north of the inlet, became Harrington. The Europeans soon overwhelmed the Biripi Aborigines living there, and the area became an important centre for timber and livestock transported through the river. It got railway lines during World War I. Harrington saw its transformation from a fishing village to a beautiful coastal town in the 1980s.
