History Hawker is a suburb of the Belconnen district of Canberra, located within the Australian Capital Territory, Australia. Hawker is the oldest town in the Australian Capital Territory. Its original inhabitants were the Ngambri people, who lived there before European settlement. The area was settled by Europeans in 1820, when it was known as Cuppacumbalong, meaning "a place of running water" in the local Aboriginal language.
