It is part of the local government area of the City of Greater Bendigo and the federal electorate of Bendigo, and the state electorate of Euroa. The suburbs closest to Heathcote are Pyalong, Metcalfe, Strathfieldsave, and Seymour. As of the 2016 census, the population of Heathcote was 3,619.

History of Heathcote In 1836, the first European explorer came to Heathcote, and by 1851 around 400 Europeans were living in the area. In late 1852, gold was discovered by McIvor Creek, attracting around 40,000 gold miners over the next six months. Heathcote turned out to be one of the largest gold mining sites during the Australian gold rush. However, most gold was soon exhausted due to heavy mining and could only be mined further through deeper deposits.
