Overview Helensburgh is a small suburb in New South Wales, Australia. It is located 45 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and 34 kilometres away from Wollongong. The suburb is around halfway between Sydney and Wollongong and lies on the northern end of the Illawarra region. As per the 2016 population census, 6,383 people were living in the area.

Living in Helensburgh Helensburgh is a beautiful town surrounded by the bushland of the Royal National Park, Woronora Dam, the Garawarra State Conservation Area, and adjacent Heathcote National park. Helensburgh is a picturesque destination, with both residents and visitors enjoying it. The dry sclerophyll bush has many walking tracks and is also home to lyrebirds. The town is famous for its annual Helensburgh Lions Club Fair held in October and attended by locals. It also hosts some other local events, including the Holy Cross and Helensburgh Primary School Fetes.

History of Helensburgh Helensburgh was initially called Camp Creek and established as a worker’s camp in the 1880s. The intention behind its establishment was to provide accommodation to coal miners of the area. It is believed that the name is related to emigration from Scotland to Australia. There was a Scottish town located by the Clyde River named Helensburgh.
