By 1866, the word had changed to "Heyfield," although whenever or why this occurred is yet unknown. It's possible that it was changed to match the wording of the neighbouring Heyfield Railway. Nevertheless, the town developed as a rest station for excavators on their route to the Gippsland discovery of gold. Their Post Office was established on September 24, 1870.
