The suburb is named after Richard Holloway, who arrived in Cairns in 1910. At first, the area was named Hollway in 1951, but it was then renamed Hollaway Beach in 1971 and finally Holloways Beach in 1981. Fast forward to 2002; the area was gazetted as a suburb of Cairns instead of a rural locality.
