Overview Howard is a historical rural town and locality in the Fraser Coast Region in Queensland. It is situated 284 kilometres north of Brisbane and is 37 kilometres west of Hervey Bay. History of Howard The town was initially known as Steley, after Abel Steley, but it was renamed Howard after William Howard. He was a pioneer in the coal mining industry in the Burrum area.
Howard and his son opened the Howard Colliery in 1877. A year later, the Burrum Post Office opened in the town, renamed Howard in 1883.
In 1879, Howard already had a provisional school, which then became a state school in 1884.
