Overview Hughesdale is a suburb of Melbourne, situated just 14 kilometres southeast of the city’s central business district. It is located in the LGA of the City of Monash and is neighboured by the suburbs of Malvern East, Chadstone, Murrumbeena, Oakleigh, Bentleigh East, and Oakleigh South.
According to the 2016 census, Hughesdale has a population of 7,556.
Living in Hughesdale Hughesdale is primarily a residential suburb boasting a location that is central to everything that any local might need.
At the north of the suburb is the “fashion capital of Melbourne”, Chadstone Shopping Centre. Located here are numerous retail stores, high-end brands, beauty supply stores, supermarkets and various food choices.
On the suburb’s west, and just a few minutes drive, is St. Kilda Beach, Elwood Beach and Brighton Beach.
Three schools operate within Hughesdale; these are Hughesdale Primary School, Sacred Heart Girls’ College and St. Angargiri Greek Orthodox College.
History of Hughesdale Hughesdale was originally a suburban area of Oakleigh. In its early years, many professionals built their homes on large estates here because of the presence of a railway nearby. During this time, the suburb’s streets had small lanes and were cobbled in bluestone.
It was in 1925 when it was suggested that a new railway was to be opened in the suburb and will be called Hugheston. The Victorian Railways, however, named the station Hughesdale before the opening of the new railway.
