Overview Inverell is a large suburb in Northern New South Wales, Australia. The suburb is in the centre of Inverell Shire, which is also home to the neighbouring towns of Gilgai, Stannifer, Elsmore, Bukkulla, Ashford, Bonshaw, Yetman, Wallangra, Graman, Oakwood, Delungra, Mount Russell, and Tingha. As of the 2016 census, the population of Inverell was 14,524.

History of Inverell The Gamilaraay Nation of Aboriginal people is said to be the original settlers of the area on which Inverell was built. The name “Inverell” has Gaelic origin, meaning “meeting place of the swans.” In 1853, wheat growers Colin and Rosanna Ross opened a store in this area. By 1858, plans for the town’s development had been approved, and the first land sale was held. The Byron Post Office in the area had been running for four years when it got replaced by the Inverell Post Office on 15 September 1859. By 1871, the population of Inverell was 509.
