Living in Ironbark The central business district of Bendigo is a short stroll from the Ironbark suburb. For many years, Ironbark was a famous business centre when it was part of Long Gully. Ironbark was gazetted as a new suburb in 1999, positioned between Long Gully and Golden Square.

History of Ironbark Ironbark was named after Ironbark Gully. Ironbark Gully was the site of immense gold-digging. The area was occupied by miners in mid-1852. Ironbark, along with its neighbour on the north, Long Gully, were intensively mined areas. The Victoria Hill Conservation area is bare-mined terrain.
The Ironbark Hill primary school opened in 1861, and a school in Violet Street opened in 1866. Before the opening of the Violet Street School, pupils got their education in a Primitive Methodist chapel. Both schools operated until 1928. Pupils then went to the Hopetoun Bandroom and the Rechabites Hall to continue their education.
