History of Jindabyne The site where Jindabyne was originally situated is now under the waters of Lake Jindabyne. The town was relocated in the 1960s before the damming of the Snowy River. The damming was done to increase the flow of inland rivers and encourage industrial development based on irrigation. Jindabyne Dam was completed in 1967, and it is a major dam in the area. The main purpose behind the construction of the dam is the generation of hydropower.
