Overview A suburb of the Central Coast located just 7 kilometres west of Gosford is Kariong. It belongs to the local government area of the Central Coast Council. Kariong sits right at the end of the Pacific Motorway before entering Central Coast. Thus it is named the entry point of the region. A mixture of locals and foreigners live here, totalling 67,195 inhabitants, as per the 2016 national census.

History of Kariong Kariong is believed to have taken its name from the local Aboriginal language, which means ‘meeting place’. This is how the Geographical Names Board describes the town’s name. However, in F. D. McCarthy’s Australian Aboriginal Place Names book, Kariong meant ‘place of the cold winds’. Gosford glyphs, a group of carvings that bear a strong resemblance to Egyptian hieroglyphs, were discovered in the area in 1975 by Alan Dash. However, questions regarding its legitimacy remain up to this day.
