History Kilburn is a suburb in the inner north of Adelaide, South Australia. The suburb borders Blair Athol, Gepps Cross, Wingfield, Regency Park and Prospect. Kilburn has the same postcode (5084) as Blair Athol and was previously known as 'Little Chicago' before its name was changed during the 20th century.The Kilburn area was first discovered in 1837 by James Alexander Kilburn and his friend, Dr. J.B.W. Jamieson. They were exploring the Limestone Ranges for copper deposits when they stumbled upon a copper deposit in the hills around Kilburn. This discovery led to the establishment of the Mount Gawler Mining Company, which was one of the largest mining operations in Australia during its time. The town of Kilburn was established in 1849 when miners began to migrate there to work at Mount Gawler Mining Company's operations.
