Overview Koo Wee Rup is a suburb in Victoria, Australia, located 63 km south-east of Melbourne Central business district. The suburb lies within the Shire of Cardinia local government area. The suburb was a part of the shire of Cranbourne before December 1994. As per the 2016 census, the suburb recorded a population of 3,579.
Living in Koo Wee Rup Koo Wee Rup is the largest asparagus-growing district in Australia. The suburb is popular for potato-growing and beef-farming, and that's why it was also known for its potato festival. This festival was held each March, and the main motive was to raise funds for the Westernport Memorial Hospital, which is now Kooweerup Regional Health Service. There are two primary schools and one secondary college in the area. Koo Wee Rup is a small town with a great community feel and is preferred by families with kids. The site is not far from beaches, shopping centres, and freeways. Though the area is growing, it has a small country town feeling.
History of Koo Wee Rup Before European settlement, the area was occupied by the Bunurong Aboriginal people. During the 1950s, Italian families settled in the area. The name of the town is believed to be originated from Aboriginal peoples' language. They used to speak a language known as Ku-wirup, which means 'plenty of blackfish' or 'blackfish swimming'. The development started in 1891, with the establishment of the post office.
