History of Kyneton The history of Kyneton is known. It started when Major Thomas Mitchell, the New South Wales Surveyor-General, crossed the area and named it Campaspe River during his 1863 expedition. Major Mitchell was not the first European in the area but Charles Ebden. Charles Ebden was the first European occupier in the area that created the Kyneton town. The Kyneton Primary School was only built in the 1950s, but it stands up to this day.
