Overview Lara is a rural town located in Geelong, Victoria. It is approximately 55 km from Melbourne CBD and is situated in the South West Coast region of the state of Victoria. It is part of the City of Greater Geelong local government area and covers 14.5 square kilometres in total land area. This suburb belongs to the federal division of Corio. It is also surrounded by other localities such as Anakie, Little River, Avalon, Corio, and Lovely Banks.
Living in Lara The rural town of Lara is notable for its historic buildings. There are plenty of well-preserved heritage-listed sites in this town, such as the Elcho Homestead, Pirra Homestead, and the Hume and Hovell Monument. Based on the latest census data, Lara is home to 16,650 people. It has three primary schools and is where the Avalon College campus is located. There is an industrial park and a couple of prisons located on the outskirts of this town.
History of Lara The first explorers set foot on the land that is now known as Lara in 1824. Before that, the land was settled by the Aboriginal people. The town was initially named Kennedy’s Creek, and it had a few other names before settling with Lara, such as Cheddar, Duck Ponds, and Lara Lake.
