History of Leura The Dharug people are known to be the original inhabitants of Leura. Archaeological evidence claims that the Aboriginals occupied the area for 12,000 years. William Lawson, Gregory Blaxland, and William Charles Wentworth led a European expedition to the site in 1813. Another expedition followed after that.

The gatekeepers of the western railway line were the first permanent European residents here. A colliery was established later after the discovery of coal in the Jamison Valley in the 1880s. The first mention of Leura was reported on a plan of subdivision in 1881. A series of housing developments came up in the area in the late 1880s and the 1890s. Postal facilities came up in 1893. In 1902, a new railway station came up.
