History of Lower Plenty In 1855, a Hungarian immigrant named Sigismund Wekey bought a 211-acre land in the suburb of Lower Plenty. Wekey's vision was to establish a wine industry in Melbourne. He was also active in pushing for the construction of bridges that would lead to the suburb. It was around 1876 when The Lower Plenty School opened, and the suburb's post office followed in 1902.
