Overview Maddingley suburb lies 60 km west of Melbourne on the way to Ballarat. The Werribee River separates the peri-urban area south of Bacchus Marsh township. It comes under the Moorabool Shire Council. The area became prominent in the 1930s following the world’s largest brown coal deposits at nearby Maddingley mines. According to the 2016 census, Maddingley had 3,453 residents.

After the coal mine opened in the 1940s, the area was transformed with people from all across Australia. By the 1980s, the local Maddingley Park reserve emerged as a favourite destination for excursionists and train travellers.
