History of Maldon Maldon was first visited by white European colonialists in 1836 and settled by pastoralists. In 1853, gold was discovered at Cairn Curran and Maldon, which became a part of the Victorian Gold Rush. The goldfield attracted many people to the area for diggings, and around 3000 miners arrived at the diggings just one month after gold was discovered. This led to the establishment of shops on the road from Castlemaine to Maldon. The Victorian government named the town Maldon in 1856 after arranging a settlement. The area also has the oldest continuously published newspaper in Victoria, the Tarrangower Times.
