History of Malua Bay It is believed that Captain James Cook first sighted Malua Bay in 1770, and he named it after Nathaniel Bateman as Cook sailed with him on the HMS Northumberland. The town's boundaries extend to Dunns Creek Road in the West, Burri Road in the South, and Ridge Road to the North. The area is approximately 280 kilometres south of Sydney and 160 kilometres east of Canberra.
