Overview Mayfield is one of the oldest suburbs of Newcastle, located six kilometres away from Newcastle's central business district. The suburb is neighboured by Mayfield West, Mayfield North, Waratah, Mayfield East, Georgetown, Islington, and Tighes Hill.

According to the 2016 census, Mayfield has a population of 9,314.

History of Mayfield Mayfield was founded in the 1800s and was named after Ada May, the daughter of landowner John Scholey. Initially, most of the suburb's land was called North Waratah, which was part of the Municipality of Waratah, where Scholey became a three-term mayor. It was also Scholey who subdivided the land and put it up for sale.

Around the early 1900s, the area was a garden suburb with a Roman Catholic monastery and many Victorian mansions owned by prominent businessmen. Scholey owned a residence in the suburb, which he called "Mayfield House". Biscuit manufacturer William Arnott also once owned a villa in the suburb.

The traditional custodians of the area where Mayfield is located are the Awabakal Aboriginal group.
