History of Milton As a town, Milton came into existence in 1860. It got its name from the Milton estate of George Knight, a local postmaster. However, Captain James Cook was the first to write about the area when his ship passed close to Pigeon House Mountain. In 1827, Thomas Kendall was the first to set up his estate in Milton. It rose to become the centre of timber trade in the 1840s. The present-day Milton town began in 1860 on the estate of John Booth, and many hotels and public buildings came up there. Today, it stands as a regional centre as well as a popular tourist destination.
