History of Mitchell The original settlers of the Maranoa region were the Gunggari and Mandandanji Aboriginal tribes. These people occupied the territory before the discovery of the Europeans. According to historical reports and archeological findings, it is believed that these communities lived in the place for approximately 19,500 years. Mandandanji stemmed from an Aboriginal language used by the earlier people who resided within the region. Moving forward, the current name was created in honour of Sir Thomas Mitchell, an explorer and surveyor who discovered the area in 1846. A couple of years later, the Mitchell Downs Post Office and Mitchell State School were opened.
