Overview Moranbah is a picturesque urban centre in the Isaac Region of Queensland. It is 160 km east of the central mining hub of Clermont and 190 km west of the beach town of Mackay. The Peak Downs Highway runs a few kilometres south of the suburb, which had 8,735 residents at the 2016 census.

History of Moranbah Following the arrival of Ludwig Leichhardt in Moranbah in 1845, the settlements began there. It was home to pastoral communities until the 1960s. Moranbah became a town in 1969, and construction of the township started in 1970. It was developed as a residential hub for the mining community working in Peak Downs, Goonyella, Broadmeadow, Moranbah and other mines. With an increase in mining activities, the town grew, and today about 40% of its working population depends on mining and allied activities.
