History of Moss Vale The original inhabitants of the area where Moss Vale is located are the Gundangara people. It is believed that they left the land in the 1870s due to European settlers. It was Governor John Hunter who sent a party to survey the area. Various explorations were made in Moss Valle and localities close by before roads were laid out and buildings were erected.
The town officially was named in 1864 after Jeremy Moss (a local herdsman) in anticipation of a nearby railway station that was opened a year later.
