History of Mudgee Mudgee was named after the Mowgee clan of the Wiradjuri Aboriginals ruling over the valley created by the Cudgegong River. There are rock-cut shelters and caves in the area attesting to its prehistoric lineage. In 1821, James Blackman became the first outsider to reach the area. Two brothers George and Henry Cox, set up the first settlement in the valley about 3 km north of the present-day Mudgee.

In 1823, the first survey of the Mudgee village was recorded. The following year saw a large-scale conflict between the settlers and the natives, leading to many deaths. By 1850, Mudgee had 200 settlers and a police station. It became a municipality in 1860, and the railway line came to the area in 1884. The agricultural centre became an urban hub in the early 1960s with the establishment of modern wine and manufacturing industries.
