Overview Muswellbrook has emerged as a major urban centre in the coal-rich Hunter Valley of New South Wales. History of Muswellbrook Muswellbrook was initially mentioned as Musclebrook in many government records. The nearby creek was also named Mussel Creek by colonial surveyors. Many trace the origin of the name to London’s Muswell Hill area. In 1819, John Howe, a policeman, arrived in the area and started a settlement. Muswellbrook was registered as a township in 1832. It hosted the No.5 aircraft fuel depot during World War II. The large-scale coal mining and the establishment of thermal power plants in the 1970s and the 1980s saw rapid growth and expansion of Muswellbrook.
