History of Nanango The name of this suburb is taken from the pastoral run in the area that William Oliver ran during the mid-1800s. It is believed that the name was inspired by a local word that means “an Aboriginal elder”. The name was based on the language of the original settlers on the land, the Wakka Wakka people. The Europeans first settled in the area in 1847, and they used the land for sheep farming.
