History of Narre Warren Narre Warren, in the Aboriginal language means small hills. Dominated by orchards and dairy farms, the suburb had its post office in 1869 and railway station in 1883. By 1900, it had schools, a mechanical institute and retail stores. However, large-scale real estate development began after 1956 when Russian migrant Isador Magid built a housing project. The estate expanded with a landmark fountain and was named the Fountain Gate locality, which became the centre of shopping in Narre Warren. In 2012, Fountain Gate encompassed 174,000 sq. metres turning second largest in Australia.
