History of Newstead Earlier, Newstead was used as a crossing place on the London River on the way to Mount Alexander diggings and Castlemaine. It began with a refreshment tent operated by Thomas Jones that was built at the crossing place. This tent was also called the ‘Bullock Drivers Home’ and was used as a sly-grog shop. It also incorporated a butcher’s shop, a bakehouse, stockyard, three-stalled stable, and garden ground. In 1857, the Post Office at Newstead opened, and in 1858, the Newstead Agricultural Society was formed by farmers and landholders.
