Overview Newstead is a suburb located along the Loddon River in Victoria, Australia. Its local government area is the Shire of Mount Alexander. As recorded in the 2016 census, the town had a population of 572.
Living in Newstead Newstead is a beautiful country town that is known for many festivals and events. Most of the festivities and events are celebrated in the centre of the golden triangle as it is close to many tourist attractions. The suburb has a community centre, two pubs, a cafe, a general store, a library, a daycare, a Rural Transaction Centre, and other services. Also, there is a small licensed IGA and Bakery and a swimming pool for recreational purposes. Moreover, the town has many sports clubs and holds a folk music festival over the Australia Day weekend. History of Newstead Earlier, Newstead was used as a crossing place on the London River on the way to Mount Alexander diggings and Castlemaine. It began with a refreshment tent operated by Thomas Jones that was built at the crossing place. This tent was also called the ‘Bullock Drivers Home’ and was used as a sly-grog shop. It also incorporated a butcher’s shop, a bakehouse, stockyard, three-stalled stable, and garden ground. In 1857, the Post Office at Newstead opened, and in 1858, the Newstead Agricultural Society was formed by farmers and landholders.
