History of Northgate The railway station in the neighbourhood was formerly known as North Coast Junction since it was where the North Coast railway line split from the Sandgate railway line (later the Shorncliffe railway line). Northgate, a created phrase combining North from North Coast and gate from Sandgate, was christened by the Queensland Railways Department in 1890.
